Ammie Lee Turner, 98, of Shellman passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 in the Joe Anne Burgin Nursing Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the New Light Freewill Baptist Church near Morgan with the Rev. Joe Murkerson officiating and interment to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 2-4 PM Tuesday December 11, 2018 at Lunsford Funeral Home.
“Miss Ammie” or sometimes “Miss Lee” as she was affectionately known, was a native of Baker County, Georgia , and lived most of her life in Randolph County with her husband William Henry Turner, a local peanut farmer.
Mrs. Turner was born Oct. 24, 1920 in Baker County the daughter of the late Alexander Washington and Mattie Howard Smith. As a housewife and later an employee at Kellwood Corporation in Cuthbert, Georgia, and prior to retirement as the manager of her mother-in-law’s community store on highway 41 between Shellman and Morgan. Mrs. Turner lived a long productive life. In her pass time, she was well-known and admired in Randolph County and will always be remembered as a person who always put God and others before herself. She was a long-time member of New Light Church and an active member in its Ladies Auxilary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander Washington Smith and Mattie Howard Smth, her husband, William H. Turner and a son, Derrell M. Turner; a brother Phil Smith and 2 sisters Gertrude Jackson and Rubye Drinkwater.
Survivors include her son, Anthony Turner of Birmingham, AL, 3 sisters, Maude Paul of Edison, Dot Milner of Edison and Odell Turner of Morgan and 4 grandchildren Camille Turner of Savannah, Brent Turner, and Allison Picchetti of Atlanta, and Eric Turner of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
