Obituary

Betty Jane Engram Lumpkin, 93, of Cuthbert, GA passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in the Fellowship at Cottonhill. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 20, 2024, in the Cuthbert Eastview Cemetery with Dr. Ben McFather officiating.

Betty was born on April 11, 1931, in Cuthbert, GA the daughter of the late Taylor Cornelius Engram and the late Rosa Maude Page Engram. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter Norman Lumpkin, Sr., 3 sisters, Lucy Kennedy, Rushabelle Brooks and Paralee Pate, and 6 brothers Raymond Engram, Marvin Engram, Ennis Engram, Mack Engram, Bobby Joe Engram, and Leroy Engram.

She was the first female mayor of Cuthbert being elected in 1988 and served from January 1988 until December 1992. She was also the Municipal Court Judge during this period of time. She was the manager of the local bus station and Western Union agent for ten years in the 1970's. She served as a teacher and director of the Preschool and Kindergarten Programs at the Cuthbert First Baptist Church beginning in 1962. She was the Activities Director for the Senior Citizens at Cuthbert First Baptist Church from 1989 until 1990, from 1992 until 1995, she was Executive Director of the Cuthbert/Randolph County Chamber of Commerce, and she owned and operated the Cuthbert Bed and Breakfast for many years. In 2014 she was the Soil and Water Conservationist of the year.

Survivors include 2 sons, Walt (Cindy) Lumpkin of Pensacola Beach, FL and Tracy (Shelia) Lumpkin of Cuthbert, 5 grandchildren, RT (LeAndra) Lumpkin of Ellaville, GA, Casey (David) Bishop of Arlington, VA, Jason (Amy) Ivey of Locust Grove, GA, Dianne Ivey of Locust Grove, GA and Bernie Bitzer of Weaver, AL, and 7 great grandchildren, Trypp Lumpkin of Ellaville, GA, Kylee Lumpkin of Ellaville, Foster Bishop of Arlington VA, Tyler Powers of Locust Grove, GA, Hannah Powers of Locust Grove, GA, Savannah Bitzer of Weaver, Al and Synder Bitzer of Weaver, Al.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Cuthbert First Baptist Church Youth Programs at P. O. Box 274 Cuthbert, GA 39840.
