JOANNE ASKEW

Mildred Joanne Hammond Askew, 94, of Dawson, GA passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, in Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Lunsford Funeral Home on Monday, August 24, 2026, with Rev. Charlie G. Bridges officiating. A private interment will be held later. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until funeral time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Askew was born on July 10, 1932, in Columbus, GA the daughter of the late Glenn Riordan Hammond and the late Juanita Clara Kennedy Hammond. She was a graduate of Terrell High School, former retail clerk for 20 years at the Dawson Belk’s Store, employed at the Pro Shop at the Dawson Country Club and retired as the manager after 12 years of the Dawson Senior Citizen Center. She was a member of the Dawson First Baptist Church, Parrott Bridge Club and the Dawson Bridge Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard Talley Askew, Sr., a special grandmother, Mildred Hammond, sister, Glenn Ellyn Powell, 2 brothers, Robert K. Hammond and Johnny Hammond and son-in-law, Ricky Smith.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Dianne Askew (Doug) Hilton of Albany, Glenda Askew Smith and Ricki Askew (Mark) Milliron both of Dawson, son, Richard T. Askew, Jr. of Dawson, sister, Juanita Hammond (Don) Bridges of Dawson, brother, Gerald (Linda) Hammond of Dawson, 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and a special friend and caregiver, Ethel Williams.
