Obituary

Maud Moore Proctor, a native and long-time resident of Cuthbert, Georgia, passed away just before 10:00 PM on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, in Vero Beach, Florida.

Mrs. Proctor, who was 96, was born in Cuthbert on January 18, 1916. Her father was Andrew Laurens Moore and her mother was Edna Mattox Moore, both of whom were from Cuthbert. A member of the Cuthbert First Baptist Church, Mrs. Proctor graduated from Cuthbert High School and Andrew College and was married in 1937 to William G. Proctor, Sr., who died in 1975. Mrs. Proctor will be buried at 10:00 AM on November 3, 2012 at a family plot in the Rosedale Cemetery, Cuthbert, Georgia.

Her survivors include three children; William Gilbert Proctor, Jr. (married to Pam Proctor) of Vero Beach, Florida, Joseph Moore Proctor of Missoula, Montana, and Peggy Proctor (married to Rev. Christopher Osborne) of Bryan, Texas. Mrs. Proctor is also survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Andrew College, Mrs. Proctor spent a year traveling about the Southeast on Greyhound buses and trains as a coach of plays for the Wayne P. Sewell production company. Trained at a Dunaway Gardens facility in Georgia by Sarah Ophelia Colley-better known by her Grand Ole Opry Stage name, "Minnie Pearl" - Mrs. Proctor not only directed each play but also supervised adverstising and promotion, including the staging of "prettiest baby" contests. Her specialty was "Black Eyed Susan"' a popular play in local theathers in the 1930's.

After marrying William G. Proctor, Sr., she lived in many other states, including Florida, Minnesota, Texsa, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Because of her husband's profession, which involved international business responsibilities, she also traveled widely with him across the United States and to many European countries and Mexico. Her extensive travel adventures actually began in Cuthbert in the early 1930's when she was in high school. She and her pal and classmate, Dora Hill Bullock, traveled by bus, train and boat with a chaperone through Canada to Alaska and back.

After the death of her husband, she lived in Cuthbert for more than 30 years. Asked on one occasion whether she felt lonely living by herself at her home on Lumpkin Street in Cuthbert, she replied, "I'm never alone. The Lord is always with me - I can talk with him whenever I want."

For her family members, Mrs. Proctor's most memorable characteristics were her sunny disposition, her devotion to her family, and her strong Christian faith. She was known especially for her constant, quiet smile at the nursing home in Vero Beach, Florida, where she spent her last months.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, gifts be sent as contributions in honor of Maud Proctor to the Cuthbert First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 274, Cuthbert, Georgia 39840.
