Ann Elizabeth DuPriest Poss was born on February 6, 1928, in the Shingler Community of Worth County, Georgia, though her early years were spent in Sylvester, Georgia. She was the daughter and only child of James Halley and Mamie Gregory DuPriest.
Educational achievements included graduation from Valdosta State University, formerly G.S.W.C., and Florida State University, College of Social Work in Tallahassee, Florida.
Ann’s social work career was primarily with the then Georgia State Department of Human Resources, though she began her career with the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina in Thomasville, NC. Her employment in Georgia was at both the county and state levels, and was primarily related to the foster care and adoption programs. For a number of years she served as the coordinator of the statewide adoption exchange.
While living in Cuthbert, Ann was active in Cuthbert First Baptist Church, including Sunday School, W.M.U., and “Happy Hearts”. She was also active in the Benjamin Hawkins Chapter of NSDAR, the Camellia Garden Club, and the Randolph Historical Society. Prior to moving to Cuthbert, Ann lived in Sylvester, GA, and was active in the First Baptist Church and other community organizations. She loved animals, music, and American History.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Herman E. Poss, on October 27, 2006. Survivors include three maternal first cousins, William H. Gregory of Valdosta, GA, Victor A. L. Gregory of Jennings, FL, and LuAnne G. NeSmith (Johnny) of Sylvester, GA. Also, one sister-in-law, Allene P. Boyett of Morris, GA. There are a number of paternal (DuPriest) cousins and other cousins, nephews, and nieces both by birth and by marriage. Included is a very special niece by marriage, Sally Boyett Whatley (Steve).
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in the Cuthbert First Baptist Church with Rev. Nathan Ziglar officiating. Interment service will be conducted a 3:00 PM in the Hill Crest Cemetery in Sylvester.
