MARGARET LASH Obituary

Margaret Annette Jones Lash was born in Pickens County, Alabama on May 24, 1941. Her parents, Wilmer Donahue Jones and Erma Dell Burgess Jones of Pickens County, moved the family to Cuthbert in 1946. Margaret cherished her childhood in Cuthbert and often reminisced about it throughout her life. She walked to school every day, and her mother would wave goodbye from the front porch and then again from the back porch as Margaret turned the corner. Margaret adored her teachers and classmates and kept in touch with many of them over the years. She loved walking to town to visit the drugstore or catch a movie, going swimming with friends, and attending Cuthbert High School, where she met Luther Lash. They married in 1956, and Luther joined the Air Force that same year. As a military family, they moved often and lived in Utah, Michigan, Louisiana, and Arkansas before returning to Georgia and settling at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta in 1971. They had two children, John Timothy Lash and Valerie Annette Lash Fleming, born in 1966 and 1970, respectively. While Luther served in Vietnam, Margaret and the children returned to Cuthbert, which allowed her parents to spend quality time with their grandchildren. During this time, Margaret also enjoyed participating in community theater. After Luther returned from Vietnam, they moved back to Valdosta.

Margaret was a hard worker who held various jobs to support her family and enjoyed volunteering. Her first job was at Woolworths in Ogden, Utah, when she was 16, and she loved it. After her divorce from Luther, Margaret moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where she worked as a property manager at a condo building for many years. Once she retired, she moved to Pennsylvania to live with her daughter, Valerie, and son-in-law, Matthew, and help raise her four granddaughters. After seven years, they relocated to Ridgefield, Connecticut, where Margaret lived with them until she moved to Eufaula, Alabama, to be closer to her brother Wayman and his family. Eventually, she moved to Athens, Georgia, to be near her son John and his wife, Gaiea. Margaret developed dementia and spent her final days at High Shoals Health Home in Bishop, Georgia, where she passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Margaret was known for her infectious laughter and love of life. She never met a stranger and always showed unconditional love to her family.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Jones Quinn (Peter) of San Bernardino, California, her brother Wayman Jones of Cuthbert, Georgia, and her ex-husband, Luther Lash of Valdosta, Georgia. She is survived by her son, John Lash (Gaiea) of Athens, Georgia, and her daughter, Valerie Annette Lash Fleming (Matthew) of Ridgefield, Connecticut, and her granddaughters: Quinn Annette Fleming, Bailey Margaret Fleming, Sloane Elizabeth Fleming, and Leighton Marie Fleming, all of Ridgefield, Connecticut. Margaret's brother and sister in laws; Jack Lash (Judy) of Arizona, Sonny Lash (Shelia) of Georgia, Paul Giles (Marilee) of Georgia, Joyce Giles Richards (Todd) of Georgia preceded her in death. Margaret has seven nieces and six nephews: Donnie Jones (Florida), Connie Jones Neville (Florida), Sharon Quinn Powell (Virginia), Corinthe Quinn Freeman (California) Daniel Giles (Georgia), Trey Giles (Georgia), Jennifer Richards (Georgia), Tonya Hancock (Georgia), Mike Lash (Georgia), Tammy Lash (Arizona), Mark Scott (Georgia), Lori Lash (Georgia), and Steven Lash (Georgia).
