Marilena Singer Andrews passed away peacefully on May 26, 2017.  She was born December 14, 1927, the proud daughter of Thelma Shierling Singer and Frank Schley Singer of Lumpkin, Georgia.  The third of four siblings, she was preceded in death by her brother, Frank Singer, Jr. and her two sisters, Anna Stark and Barbara Redmond.

After graduating from high school in Lumpkin, Mrs. Andrews attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and Brenau College in Gainesville, GA, where she graduated with a degree in history in 1948.  She then taught high school history in Cuthbert, GA, where she was introduced by her dear friend Anne Connelly Cheney to a local farmer and World War II veteran, Wallace Reid Andrews, Jr. of Carnegie, GA, who would become her husband of 56 years.  She was the ever faithful helpmate of her husband through the trials of dry land farming in Calhoun County and through his long years of illness.  Mr. Andrews preceded her in death in 2005.

Mrs. Andrews adored her two daughters, Frankie Andrews Hollister and husband, Dr. Dickerman Hollister, Jr., of Greenwich, CT, and Martha Andrews Corrigan and husband, Christopher Corrigan, of Savannah and Edison, GA.  She was known fondly as “MaLena” to her four grandchildren, Catherine Reid Hollister and Dickerman Hollister III of Greenwich, CT, Thomas Patrick Corrigan of New York, NY, and Mary Wallace Corrigan of Davis, CA.  A witty, generous, and fiercely loyal wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Andrews will be sorely missed by these who survive her and by those many cousins, nieces, and nephews who were always a support and joy to her.

A longtime church pianist at Carnegie Baptist Church, Mrs. Andrews shared her appreciation of music by teaching piano to local children and by playing for the weddings and funerals of friends. A woman of many talents, Mrs. Andrews also shared her love of sewing, making draperies and clothes for friends and family, and delighting many with her counted cross-stitch creations.  If not playing or stitching, she was often reading.  She served as one of Edison, GA’s earliest librarians.  A speed reader since high school, she often claimed to have read everything “worth” reading in the library many times over.  Outside of her quieter pursuits, Mrs. Andrews could often be found laughing with family and friends on the golf course or at the bridge table or planning a party to satisfy her love of entertaining others.

All who knew her are invited to join her family in celebrating her life at the visitation at Lunsford Funeral Home on Saturday, May 27 at 5:30pm or at funeral services at Edison Baptist Church at 2pm on Sunday, May 28, 2017 with interment to follow in  the Carnegie Baptist Church.
